My name is Claire Wheat and I'm from Lichfield in Staffordshire.
I am an innovative, experimental and experienced mixed media artist, using both hand stitching and machine embroidery and often incorporating some quilting techniques.
My work is often influenced by my love of science and a desire to use the old and the new; the natural and the manufactured; and all manner of found items to create distinctive art pieces.
I am also an avid enthusiast of natural dyes and dyeing, experimenting with new dye sources and mixing/overdyeing different dyes for different effects. I grow a lot of flowers, fruit and vegetables which provide a rich source of inspiration.
My garden also provides heaps of material for direct use in my textile work, to make papers and paper fabric and to provide the basis for dyes!

I have completed a number of City & Guilds courses, the most recent being the Diploma in Creative Techniques.
Last year I designed and made a model of the Periodic Table of Elements using a variety of mixed media and contemporary embroidery techniques. This was exhibited at the Sewing for Pleasure show at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, as part of the Fulcrum Textile Group’s stand in March 2012 where it generated a lot of interest. This was followed by an article commissioned for Workbox magazine, in July 2012.
The piece was exhibited again at the Festival of Quilts show at the NEC in August 2013 where it was awarded "Highly Commended" by the judges in the Quilt Creations section of the competition.
